When buying a new lawn mower, you need to decide up front if you plan to mulch or collect the grass clippings trimmed off by your lawn mower. Below is a short list of reasons to do one or the other:
Using a Grass Catcher:
1. Extra Effort - You will need to unload all the grass you collect. This will happen several times while mowing a normal size lawn. You'll also have to find a place to dump the lawn clippings, or pack them in recycle bags for the garbage men to take.
2. Extra Maintenance - It requires more parts to collect the grass. This means more parts to maintain and more parts to replace when they wear out.
3. Cleaner Lawn - By collecting the grass, your lawn will look cleaner. it will remove grass and any other small debris found in your lawn. This is the most common reason for collecting grass.
Using a Grass Mulcher:
1. More Expensive - Typically, a mower that mulches will cost more than a mower that catches grass.
2. Healthier Lawn - When you mulch, the grass clippings that stay on the lawn provide the nutrients that your lawn needs.

It’s like doing surgery on a person while they are awake. Dormancy starts in the fall as soon as you experience a good hard freeze, and the plants remain dormant until the weather warms up in the spring. This is when you should transplant, while the plants are dormant.
