Lawn Care

Proper watering is one of the most important aspects of lawn care. Too little water will cause your lawn grasses to wilt or cause brown patches to appear in your lawn. On the other hand, too much water can "drown" the grasses and cause your lawn to die. Here are a few things you need to know before you start watering your lawn.

1. The type of soil your lawn has.

Different soil has different water holding capability. In general, there are three types of soil - sandy soil, clay soil and loamy soil. Sandy soil has the poorest water holding capability and thus requires frequent watering. On the other end, clay soil has excellent water holding capability but very poor aeration. Thus it is necessary to water the lawn slowly over a longer duration so that water can reach the grass roots. Loamy soil falls between sandy and clay soil. It has adequate water holding capability and enough aeration for the grass roots to receive water and air.

2. The climate where you live.

The climate has a direct impact on how much water your lawn needs. Just like human beings, lawns required more water in hot weather than cool or cold weather. However, if you live in an area with lots of rain, you may not need to water your lawn at all.

3. The right time to water your lawn.

It is generally not advisable to water your lawn in the middle of the day. More water is required, as the rate of evaporation is much faster. Instead, try watering in the morning or evening. The weather is cooler during these two times, which allows the water to soak into the soil.

4. Use of an irrigation system.

For a small lawn, it is usually sufficient to do the watering with a water hose. However, for large lawns or for efficiency and cost saving purpose, it is a good idea to consider installing an irrigation system to automate the task. A good irrigation system will help you save water and money as well as free up your time. A spray lawn sprinkler is a good choice if your lawn has an even surface. This will provide water to your lawn in a shorter period of time. If your lawn is on a slope, a rotor lawn system will be more appropriate as it can apply water slowly and still cover a large area.

In order to have a lush green lawn, proper watering of your lawn cannot be neglected. Deep watering is necessary in order to have deep healthy grass roots. With proper watering, your lawn will stay green and healthy throughout the year.
