It is very common nowadays for mulch to be used to accent your landscape. When mulching around your trees you need to understand the pros and cons of mulching. Here is a short list of practical dos and donts for mulching around trees.
First, here are the benefits of mulching around your trees.
- Mulch keeps the moisture in the soil that it is covering.
- Mulch keeps the soil cooler during those hot summer months.
- Mulch helps stop unwanted weeds from coming up.
- Mulch provides an attractive and clean appearance.
You can see there are several reasons to mulch around your trees, but you want to make sure it's done correctly. It's not uncommon to see the base of a tree dressed like a volcano with mulch. This is not what you want to do. If the mulch is in contact with the tree trunk for long periods of time your trunk will start rotting from the moisture. You want the mulch around a tree to look more like a donut. Start the mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Keep it about 3 inches deep and do not go deeper than 4 inches at any one spot. Follow these simple guidelines and you should have great success with your mulching.
