Anyone with dogs as pets will be familiar with the yellow, dead spots left behind on your lawn from your dog's urine. This is really a problem with female dogs that typically pee in the same spots, but can it does happen with male dogs as well. Your dog's urine has a concentration of acids (nitrogen) that will kill the grass it comes in contact with over a period of time, much like the way too much fertilizer affects your lawn. What can be done about this problem? There are several solutions that you can try.
The most common and arguably effective treatment is to saturate the pee spot with water. Enough water has to be used to wash the acid past the roots of the grass. While effective, it takes time and more importantly consistency. This approach is not for the lazy.
For those with the patience and time to spend with their dog, it is possible to train your dog to do their business in one spot that is not in the middle of your lawn, and even a place that is filled with sand so no lawn is damaged. Again, you need to be consistent, but take your dog out to pee on their leash to their spot. Keep them there until they have gone and give them a lot of praise.
Another method is to alter the pH of the urine, which can be done by modifying your dogs diet. Brewers Yeast is something found in most dog food, but it's not at a level that has enough effect on their urine acidity. It has been suggested that an additional teaspoonful of Brewers Yeast, to the dog's daily diet, can reduce the pH of the urine enough to prevent lawn damage.
The same strategy can be used for lawns. If there are common areas on the lawn that are affected by the dog's urine, sprinkle them with lime. Lime is helpful to your lawn and can reduce the effects of the acidness of the urine.
Finally, there are commercial products available to help. Some products can fix the dead areas of the lawn affected by your dog's urine. Other products can be given to your pets as treats and they will help prevent the lawn damage. Try a search on http://www.bestpethealth.com for products.
